Mark your calendars for August 21st!  Pick up your free solar eclipse glasses at the library!  Check back here and on our Facebook page for library activities happening at the library on the day of the eclipse!

Everyone in the contiguous United States will see at least a partial solar eclipse, while the thin path of totality will pass through portions of 14 US States.  Here in Sidney, Montana we should see a nearly 90% eclipse.  For a detailed map, click here.

In Richland County, the eclipse will begin around 10:20am, and end around 1:00pm/  Maximum eclipse will be around 11:30am.

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as "eclipse glasses" or hand-held solar viewers.  Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun.

A few important reminders:
  • Always supervise children using solar filters.
  • Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun.  After looking at the sun, turn away and remove your filter...do not remove it while looking at the sun.
  • Do not look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculaurs, or other optical device.
  • Always inspect your solar glasses before use.  If scratched or damaged, discard them.
