1. How do I get a library card?

There is a one business day waiting period once an application for a library card has been received..  Stop by the library during our regular business hours.  We will need photo identification and proof of your local mailing address when you submit your completed application. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must sign your application.

2. Can I get a library card if I don’t live in Richland County?

You can get an out-of-county card If you live outside Richland County. Please bring photo ID, proof of your mailing address.  The out-of-county fee is $10/year.

3. What are your hours?

• Monday, Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
• Saturday & Sunday - Closed

• Closed for all Richland County recognized state and federal holidays. Please contact the library for specific questions about closures.

4. How many items can I check out?

DVDs are limited to 5 per patron card. We do not limit the number of books, magazines or books on CD. 

5. Can I renew materials over the phone?

Yes, items can be renewed over the phone, just call us at 433-1917 during our business hours. Items cannot be renewed if another patron has placed a hold, and we may limit renewals on high-demand items like DVDs and other popular or new materials.

6. Does the library offer fax services?

Yes, the library provides fax services. Faxes may be sent and received at the library.  Cost to receive faxes is ten cents per page.  Cost to send faxes to toll numbers is 75 cents per page.  Cost to send faxes to toll-free numbers is 25 cents per page.

7. Does the library have a copy machine?

Yes. Copies are $0.10/page for black & white, or $1.00/page for color.

8. How long can I keep books checked out?

Books and magazines are checked out for 28 days, except in the case of new or high-demand items, which generally have a two-week check-out. If your item has a limited check-out, you will be told at check-out.

9. How long can I keep DVDs checked out?

DVDs are checked out for 7 days. They can generally be renewed twice unless another patron has placed a hold on the item.

10. Can I return books after hours?

Yes, there is an book drop just outside the front door.

11. Can I check out magazines and newspapers?

Yes, all magazines and newspapers can be checked out. 

12. What happens if I lose a book or other item?

If you lose a book you will be charged the replacement cost of the book plus a $5 processing fee.

13. Does the library accept donations?

Yes, the library greatly appreciates donations. For a complete list of acceptable items or for more specific questions please contact the library at 433-1917. Please bring your donations to one of our circulation desks during  business hours. Once items are donated they become the property of the Sidney-Richland County Library.

The library works in partnership with a worldwide organization, Better World Books. All Items not added to our collection are sent to their main sorting facility. The library receives a percentage of the profits for any materials that can be sold through their online book store. Other materials are distributed worldwide to areas in great need. Any remaining books are recycled. If Better World Books will not accept the item, the library will recycle it through a partnership with ROI.  Upon request, the library can provide a receipt for tax purposes.

14. Does the library have computers available for public use?

Yes, there are 3 Quiet Area Computers and 4 Juvenile Computers.

1. Do you have eBooks I can download?

Yes! We have two ways to access a variety of econtent.  First, we are a part of Montana Library2Go.  Just download the Libby app to get started.  Second, you can also download Hoopla.  We would be happy to assist you to get these platforms set up on your device.

2. What if I forget my PIN or lose my card?

You can get a replacement card at the library for $1. We can reset your PIN over the phone, or when you visit the Library.

3. Can I place a hold on an item online?

Yes, holds can be placed through our online card catalog. Access to the catalog is found on the top left hand option.  Log in with your card number and PIN.  Please feel free to call us if you need assistance with either of these items.

Once logged in you can search for the item(s) you want.  Once you have clicked on the item you can click the PLACE HOLD link. Once the item is available  you will receive a notification that your items are available at the main front desk.

1. Can my child have a library card?

Yes, but you will be responsible for any items they borrow, including any fines or replacement fees. We encourage parents to use the library with their child to help them find and check out appropriate items.

1. Do you offer any classes?

Yes, we offer a variety of classes, programs, and events for all ages.  Patrons can pick up a monthly calendar at either circulation desk or follow us on Facebook to keep up to date on all the latest announcement for classes and event.

2. Do you have computers for public use?

Yes, we have 7 Quiet Area Computers and 4 Juvenile Computers.

3. Do you have databases with magazines and articles I can search from home?

Yes. As a library patron you have access to a variety of databases.  On the left-hand toolbar click on "online tools and resources".   If you need a password or have additional questions, just visit the library or call 433-1917.

1. What are your hours?

All offices of Richland County are open 8AM to 5PM Monday through Friday, with the exception of the following Holidays:

• January 1 - New Years Day
• Third Monday in February - President’s Day
• Good Friday (Offices close at Noon)
• May 31 - Memorial Day
• July 4 (or observed date) - Independence Day
• First Monday in September - Labor Day
• Second Monday in October - Columbus Day

2. How do I contact a city/county department?

To contact the City of Sidney, please follow the link, or call (406) 433-2809. To contact the Town of Fairview, please follow the link, or call (406) 742-5616.

3. Where do I go to title a vehicle, or get license plates?

Vehicle registration, and license plates are obtained through The Richland County Treasurer’s Office. The Treasurer’s office is located on the second floor of the old courthouse at 201 W. Main St, in Sidney. Title work cannot be completed after 4:45PM, so if you’re attempting to transfer a title please arrive prior to that time.

4. Where do I go to get a copy of my Montana birth certificate?

Certified copies of your Montana birth certificate can be obtained at the Clerk & Recorder’s office. The Clerk & Recorder’s office is located on the third floor of the old courthouse, at 201 W. Main St, in Sidney. 

The cost of each certified copy is $8.00 payable by check or cash only. Please bring photo ID with you.

5. Where do I go to apply for a passport?

You can apply for your passport at the Clerk of District Court’s Office. Their office is located on the second floor of the Law and Justice Center at 300 12th Ave NW, in Sidney. For additional details, please call (406) 433-1709.
