Application Process
Applications generally take 20-30 minutes to process. Montana Marriage Licenses can be used immediately or within 180 days. It is valid in any county within Montana but not in any other state or country. After the marriage ceremony the license must be returned to the Clerk's office within 30 days for completion and filing with the state. Once it is returned to the couple the license can be used as proof for name change.

Marriage License Hours
Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Friday's 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday's 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
What You Need
- Both parties must be present
- Photo ID for both parties - Driver's License, State ID, Passport ect.
- $53 in Cash
- If previously married - Divorce Decree with Judge's Signature - Certified Copy is preferred but not required.
Obtaining Copies of Your Marriage License
Copies of licenses issued in Richland County are available at the office of the Clerk of District Court's. A regular copy is $5.00 and a certified copy is $7.00. If you were married in Richland County but obtained your license in another county we may not be able access the document. Please call if you have questions about this.
Obtaining a Copy by Mail
- Provide your full name at the time of the marriage including maiden names
- Provide date of marriage
- Request regular or certified copy
- Include a self addressed, stamped envelope and contact number
- Provide appropriate fee - can be either cash or money order made payable to Clerk of District Court
